Online Christmas Shopping The Back Safe Way

christmas shopping advice from our ealing chiropractorsYes it’s that time of year again when our attentions turn to Christmas. The clocks have gone back, the shops are filling their shelves with Christmas goods and the TV Christmas advert epics have kicked off. The countdown is underway!

Not so many years ago the preparations for Christmas inevitably meant hitting the shops, be they local shops or stores in out nearest cities. However, the internet has changed our shopping habits significantly with more and more of us every year turning to online stores for our shopping.

We might be lulled into thinking that avoiding carrying heavy shopping bags, fighting with unwieldy shopping trolleys and standing in endless queues would lessen the harm we could do our backs. After all sitting in front of our PCs, or having the laptop on our laps or hunching over our mobile phones doing our Christmas shopping must be easier on our backs, surely?

Well yes and no.

Siting at our computers for long periods of time with poor posture can cause many stresses and strains on the body. Poor posture over time can lead to back pain so our chiropractors at The Spine & Joint Centre in Ealing want to stress the importance of having and maintaining a good seated posture.

To help you with this our chiropractors have these top tips for you to follow:

  1. Avoid sofa surfing: It’s so easy to fall into the trap of reaching for your laptop or mobile device while lounging on the sofa and before you know it you have been there for a couple of hours unaware that you are straining your back and neck.
  2. Chair & desk set up: It’s really important to set up your chair and desk to suit your individual needs. When sitting in your chair your feet should be flat on the floor and your knees should be positioned below the height of your hips, about 10 degrees lower. Your bottom and shoulder blades should rest against the back of your chair. You will need to adjust  the height of your screen so that you eye level is at  the top of the screen.
  3. Take regular breaks: Stand up and move around at least every 30 minutes. This is also an opportunity to do some simple stretches.
