New Parents: Watch Your Back!

back care advice for parnets from our Ealing chiropractorBeing a parent is wonderful.  But it can also be tough on your spine! According to our chiropractors at the Spine and Joint Centre in Ealing, many people first experience back pain after having a baby. Extra bending and lifting combined with less sleep can have a negative impact on your spine. And of course,  being a new parent often means you become less attentive to your own physical health.

Our Ealing chiropractor offers these top tips to keep your back healthy and pain-free as you go through the stages of parenthood.

Take Care When Lifting and Carrying

Babies and toddlers get heavier and heavier! But it’s not just the carrying that does the damage to your spine. Lifting your little one in and out of car seats and cots is a big culprit for backpain, and that’s without mentioning all the extra luggage you carry around with you as a parent.

So what can you do?

Instead of carrying weight on one side of your body, alternate the sides you lift on, and use different carrying positions, such as in front of you or over your shoulder. Doing this will help to evenly distribute the load on your spine and reduce the risk of back pain.

Maintain Good  Posture When Breast Feeding

It is important that you maintain a good posture when breastfeeding, even it is 3 am and all you want to do is slump on your sofa!

When you are feeding your baby, try to sit in a sturdy, supportive chair with arms. Keep an upright posture with your shoulders back and chest open.

In between gazing into the eyes of your beautiful newborn baby, you can reduce the risk of back and neck pain by ensuring you have periods of keeping your head in an upright position.

Push Your Pram Properly

Many parents take the “head down, bent over” position when pushing a pram, but this  can wreak havoc on your lower back.

You can protect the health of your spine by standing tall and keeping your hips as close to the pram as possible.

Having a new baby puts many demands on your physical health, but by following these simple tips, you can seriously reduce the risks of developing chronic back pain in the future.
