Increasingly back pain is becoming a more and more common problem. It is therefore surprising how many myths still surround back pain. Often these myths can hold people back from seeking professional medical advice and delaying appropriate treatment for their back pain.
Every day our chiropractor at our busy chiropractic clinic in Ealing treats patients who are suffering back pain. In speaking with these patients our chiropractor hears some of the most common myths held about back pain.
Here are the 3 most common ones:
Myth #1: I didn’t think I would suffer back pain
As already mentioned, back pain, is very common. In fact most of us will not escape suffering back pain at some point in our lives.
Our chiropractor recommends that if you are suffering back pain you should seek professional medical attention from a chiropractor, GP or other medical professional. The earlier you seek treatment the more likely it is that your problem can be treated more effectively and quickly.
Myth #2: If I rest my back it will get better
Unfortunately many people make the mistake of believing that by resting their painful back they are helping it. In most cases of back pain this is not the case.
Increasing bodies of evidence disprove this myth. For example earlier this year the Lancet published research that shows movement and physical activity to be the best treatment for low back pain.
Myth #3: I’ll just take some pills and the pain will go away
In this day and age there seems to be a tablet for most things and reaching for them seems like a safe and fast option when we are in pain.
As with myth #2, research shows that in most cases medication isn’t the answer to back pain. The research published in the Lancet and referenced in myth #2 suggests that back pain is over medicalised in the West. Painkillers will not treat the cause of your symptoms.
