“Stop slouching” “Sit up Straight” “Stand Tall” – these may have been nagging comments you heard from your mother or school teacher but it may have been advice that we could all do with adhering to in our daily lives.
It’s unfortunate that as chiropractors we see too many patients who experience back pain that could be avoided. One of the common causes of back problems is poor posture. Therefore, having and maintaining good posture is important if we want to prevent back pain.
The good news is that improving your posture doesn’t have to be hard. There are some simple things you can incorporate in your daily life that can help improve your posture and reduce the risk of back pain.
Our chiropractor at the Spine & Joint Centre in Ealing recommends that you start using a simple three minute programme that has been developed by the British Chiropractic Association (BCA) as part of your daily routine. Just like brushing your teeth!
The programme is called Straighten Up UK. It has been specifically designed to promote balance, strength and flexibility in your spine.
The programme is made up of three sessions:
- Warm Up
- Posture Care
Each session has a series of exercises and stretches with a specific purpose. The exercises can be adapted to suit your capabilities. You can discuss these exercises with your GP, chiropractor or other health care practitioner to make sure they are right for you.
The exercises are easy to learn and you can follow the programme by watching the video below.
