As chiropractors in a busy chiropractic clinic in Ealing we find that we frequently have to recommend that patients incorporate more exercise into their daily lives. For many their first thought is that they will have to take out an expensive gym membership, for others it’s a dread that they feel of having to go to the gym!
The good news is that for most of our patients the exercise we recommend they start out with is not gym related at all. The form of exercise we recommend that most people start to incorporate in their daily lives is free, accessible and can be done by most people and that’s walking.
Many people underestimate the benefits of walking to their health and well-being which is such a shame. It is by far and away the easiest way to get more active.
The other benefit of walking as a form of exercise is that it is simple to get started. Our chiropractors recommend that you wear a good and supportive pair of shoes. A good pair shouldn’t cause you blisters!
You can start by walking around your local area, however, in and around Ealing there are some great places to walk. One of our past posts – Get Walking Around Ealing – provides information regarding some great websites that offer information about walking routes around Ealing. The post also provides a link to Ealing Walks an accredited health walk scheme that organises local walks on a weekly and monthly basis.
Our chiropractors recommend that if you haven’t taken any form of exercise for some time that you start out slowly and build up your walking pace. You do want to get to the point that you are walking at a pace faster than a gentle stroll. A good test if you are at that pace is to sing a song. If you find you can’t sing but can speak the words you’re probably at the right pace.
Get those walking shoes on and get outdoors this autumn.
Before starting a new exercise programme you should discuss it with your GP, chiropractor or other health care practitioner, especially if you have any health concerns.
