What Is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a specialised discipline that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system. It was founded on the belief that making adjustments to the spine could repair the central nervous system and treat a wide variety of conditions.

Modern chiropractors will use their hands to examine and treat problems involving the joints, bones, and muscles. They can also treat conditions which are associated with musculoskeletal problems like poor posture, headaches, fibromyalgia, and arthritis. There are several types of chiropractic adjustments including:

  • Direct Thrust Technique
This technique uses high-velocity thrusts to correct misalignments in the vertebrae of the back.
  • Spinal mobilisation
Spinal mobilisation is another technique for correcting misalignments of the spine. It uses a combination of firm pressure and stretches.
  • Myofascial release
The chiropractor can massage and stretch the myofascial membrane covering the muscle to relieve pain and restore mobility.
  • Articulatory
This involves slow movements of the limbs throughout their entire range of motion in reduce stiffness and improve mobility.

What Are The Risks Of Receiving Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is completely safe when performed by a fully trained and licensed chiropractor. They have the skills, knowledge, and experience necessary to deliver chiropractic care in the safest way possible.

However, it is important to understand that it may be unsafe for people with certain medical conditions to receive some chiropractic treatments. If you have one of the following conditions or symptoms, speak with your doctor before making a chiropractic appointment:

Severe osteoporosis

If you are suffering from severe osteoporosis, your bones may fracture or break very easily. This can make certain chiropractic treatments dangerous to perform. However, chiropractors can still perform several soft tissue therapies on most patients with osteoporosis.

Numbness or tingling in an arm or leg

There are several potential causes of numbness or tingling in the limbs, including nerve damage, stroke, and disorders of the brain or spinal cord. Visiting a chiropractor should be avoided until you have had the cause of your numbness or tingling diagnosed by a medical professional.

An increased risk of stroke

If you have a had a stroke previously or have a higher risk of stroke, it may be unsafe to visit a chiropractor. This is due to the fact that certain neck adjustments can place pressure on the arteries in the neck. If you are pre-disposed to stroke, you should avoid those types of adjustments. Fortunately, there are several other types of adjustments available which do not place pressure on the neck.

Cancer in the spine

People with cancer in or surrounding their spine may experience a lot of back pain. Unfortunately, visiting a chiropractor is unlikely to help you resolve that pain. Additionally, if you have brittle vertebrae as a result of your cancer, it can be dangerous to have spinal adjustments.

What About The Popping Noise?

One of the reasons why so people are cautious about visiting a chiropractor is that some spinal adjustments can cause a cracking or popping noise. This noise is the reason why people mistakenly believe chiropractic adjustments are potentially unsafe.

In reality, the popping or cracking noise is simply a result of gas bubbles in the joints popping. These bubbles are caused by changes in pressure resulting from chiropractic adjustments. There is no pain associated with the popping or cracking noises that are sometimes heard.

When patients visit our Ealing chiropractor they have the option of specifying which treatment options they prefer. If you don’t wish to have the Direct Thrust Technique used (which often causes cracking or popping), simply tell your chiropractor.
