Avoid the Pain of Christmas Shopping

back care advice from our ealing chiropractorChristmas is coming!

Well, not just yet, but it will soon be here!  From now on in, those Christmas songs that you love to loathe will be bellowing through every shop on the High Street and he crowds will start swarming in. There’s no doubt the festive period is on its way and that means it’s time to start the Christmas shopping!

While the majority of shops do their best to make the Christmas shopping experience a little easier with pretty decorations and perfectly decorated trees, the reality is that for most people, it’s still just a job that needs to be done! But if you suffer from back problems, Christmas shopping can literally be a pain!

According to our Ealing chiropractor, you should stagger your  Christmas shopping trips over the course of a few days or weeks to reduce the pressure on your spine.  When you go shopping, you should also try to find a parking space that’s close to the shopping centres or arrange for someone to take you and pick you up if you can. We also recommend that you evenly distribute your shopping across both sides of your body. Spreading the weight evenly across your body will help to reduce pressure in one specific area of your spine.

When you’re Christmas shopping, you should also remember to:

  • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated
  • Lift and bend at your knees
  • Use a trolley instead of a basket
  • Avoid long queues
  • Ask for help with any heavy or awkward items
  • Carry heavy loads to close to your body

And if you’re online shopping:

  • Take frequent breaks away from your laptop or computer
  • Maintain good posture
  • Sit at a comfortable desk instead of slouching on the sofa
  • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated
  • Get up, change position and move around regularly
  • Sit in a good chair that offers adequate lumbar support

Back injuries as a result of Christmas shopping are relatively common, but they can easily be avoided by following the simple advice in this post. Plan your shopping trip in advance, take your time and don’t be among the shoppers our chiropractors have to see this season. Even something as seemingly insignificant as a pulled muscle can lead to chronic back pain.
